Murray Area Council

The mission of the Murray Area Council of the International Reading Association (MACIRA) is aligned with the mission of the International Reading Association to promote lifelong reading and quality literacy instruction.

MACIRA is committed to encouraging all teachers and students in the western Kentucky area to recognize and appreciate that books, reading, and writing can enhance and enrich the lives of all members of our community.  MACIRA is a membership based learning community supporting literacy professionals through use of resources, volunteerism, advocacy efforts, guest speakers, and professional development activities. MACIRA works closely with Kentucky Reading Association and area school districts and community organizations to promote networking and build rapport between pre-service teachers and current education professionals.

The Murray Council is comprised of the following counties: Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken, and Trigg. We invite you to join us as we strive to promote literacy as a lifelong learning style.
